La Gorge de Sawcut (The Sawcut Gorge)

Dans le coin Nord-Est de la Nouvelle-Zélande (Île du Sud) une rivière a taillé une fente profonde à  travers une falaise de calcaire. Cette coupure est si étroite qu'elle semble avoir été faite par une scie gigantesque, d'où son nom : la Gorge Sawcut. L'accès à cette particularité géologique intéressante n'est pas facile, mais pour des gens en pleine forme la balade vaux bien l'effort accompli. C'est complètement du hors-piste. D'abord on marche sur le lit pierreux de la rivière, traversant et retraversant la rivière assez souvent.

Near the north-east corner of the South Island of New Zealand a river has cut a deep, narrow chasm through a limestone cliff. This chasm is so narrow that it looks as though it has been fashioned by a huge saw - hence its name: Sawcut Gorge. Access to this interesting geological feature is not easy, but for reasonably fit people the trip is well worth the effort.There is no track to follow.  At first one walks up a gravelly river bed, crossing and recrossing the river from time to time.

On arrive bientôt là où la vallée se rétrécit et où la rivière est coincée entre deux falaises calcaires verticales.

Soon the valley narrows and the river is confined between vertical limestone cliffs.  

  Une heure et demi plus tard, après avoir marché dans des bassins et escaladé de gros rochers, change de direction et on arrive à la Gorge  Sawcut. C'est époustouflant de marcher dans un espace large de moins de 5 mètres entre deux parois de plus de 150m !

After about an hour and a half of wading through pools and scrambling over large boulders one turns into a side-stream and soon arrives at Sawcut Gorge. It is quite amazing, being nowhere wider than 5 metres and at least 150 metres high.

Heureusement pour le randonneur il y a un élargissement au sol donc on peut traverser et examiner à loisir les belles couleurs et les formes gracieuses de la roche. 

Luckily for us the chasm widens out at the bottom, so one can wade right inside and examine the beautiful  colours and shapes of the rock walls.

Quand ces photos ont été prises l'eau était calme et peu profonde mais par temps pluvieux la rivière paisible se transforme en un torrent enragé et venir ici relève du suicide ! 

When these photos were taken the water was shallow but on rainy days the river is a raging torrent and the whole trip becomes dangerous if not impossible.
